Why is the side of the moon that faces earth covered is such BIG craters?

If you look at a pic of the dark side of the moon, the side that faces AWAY from Earth, you'll see that it's covered with tiny, little craters. But on the side of the moon that ALWAYS faces Earth, you can see BIG, Giant craters. Why? Hint: it can't be asteroids or meteors, because the Earth's gravity would pull them in and they'd hit Earth, and NOT the moon. Hint: You have to go back to the time of Atlantis to discover this answer.
