Why is my camera doing this?

I have a Nikon D40x. I love it, most of the time. However, when I take a photo of something from far away, I get a lot of what appears to be noise, but looks more like haze. In close up photos, this doesn't happen. What is going on? Why aren't my photos coming out clearer? Is there something I can do to change this?
