Can you use pure ethanol instead of gasoline in your car ?

I know that ethanol is mixed with gasoline to make fuel. I am wondering if people can use ethanol instead of gasoline. If you don't mind can you explain why and how ethanol can benefit/harm the economy or environment. thanks.
