Is it merely mythology?

The eye is a symbol of divine providence. It generally represents the all-pervasive watch of some being who presides over the cosmic order and ensures that everything unfolds according to some higher purpose. Of course, Tolkien used it to represent the same thing, only from the perspective of an evil being.
